The Common Core State Standards were designed to be robust and relevant to the Real World. Often times it is hard to connect these abstract skills to fields students might be interested in.
How often do you feel like you encounter this attitude?
Probably more often than we would like, right? Of course I always like to stress that math is about problem solving, as well as how it builds, and I know we all have our own way of combating this constant attitude.
But sometimes making math more about how it can be used and what real life contexts math is used in can help a student make that connection! That great moment when a student sees some value in what you are teaching them, rather than you're just teaching it because Ohio Department of Education is saying students must learn it.
These short videos contain some great real world examples of how Algebra can be used in different fields!

The video clips are a great way of showing students how people in fashion, music and video gaming industries (among others) use math! They could be used as an introduction to a topic or they have challenge activities and questions that they pose following the video that could be incorporated into lessons.
